Patterns and Designs

Patterns play such an important role in our homes - whether they are used in fabrics or wallpaper or even wrapping paper - a piece above I've held onto for ages. I just love the delightful design and strong colours - plus the subject matter is slightly unusual - which is probably why I'd drawn to it.

Artist Sarah Lugg - uses wonderful designs in her work - two examples below are taken from postcards I have - I love the meticulous organization with the odd mix of objects. Many years ago I was lucky enough to buy an original piece from her at the New York Gift Show - I treasure it.

Below is this vintage inspired shelf banner I found - I think it could be used to trim out a cupboard either in a shop or at home - I've never used it but I'm sure I will someday.

I've been going through my shelves of books once again and came across this one by Cath Kidston (published by Chronicle Books in 2006 - all photographs featured below are from the book and taken by Pia Tryde).
The book focuses on ideas for using vintage fabrics in your home but I love the pattern and design inspirations and the styling is really well done as well- so I just love looking at the photos.

This delightful bird and flower print has a wonderfully nostalgic feel to it.

A patchwork cushion and curtains play a rainbow of designs against each other.

I just love this - I had to leave a chair like this behind in the states when we moved because we just couldn't fit it in the container - I'd love it now so I could re-upholster it and give it a fresh lease on life.
